A 13th-century Welsh castle gets taken over by the best of this year's new fabric collections
Autumn is upon us, which means designers, brands and fabric houses are dropping this year's exciting new collections of textiles. Each year our decoration team goes all out to produce a brilliant shoot using their favourite new launches, and this year the inspiration was the medieval world, for which they headed to Beaumaris Castle on the Welsh island of Anglesey, and Conwy Castle a little further down the coast of North Wales. ‘We have long had the idea to do a fabric shoot based on a sort of fantasy version of medieval life,’ says our Style Director Ruth Sleightholme. ‘It is a time when textiles were held in such incredibly high regard, when clothing and banners contained such a rich array of meanings and messages. Garments and outfits were complicated, ritualised and precious things; and wall-hangings and tapestries were really significant vehicles for decoration.
’But we also liked all the silliness and camp of the medieval reenactment scene and various TV costume references, so we didn't want this photoshoot to go to too much of an academic place. At first the idea was going to be very 'fancy-dress' / 'medfest', but after spending some time with the paintings in the National Gallery, we saw many beautiful costume details that we wanted to copy, and the shoot took on a more delicate feel. We found an amazing slew of castles in North Wales all built in a very similar style by Edward I in the 13th century, which acted as beautiful backdrops for the fantasy, and we had a lovely time shooting there!’
